ESTABLISHED 1889
Our History
Maplewood Heritage Inn was built in 1889 as a private residence on what was once part of the Sidmount Estate. Set back from North River Road along a long, tree-lined drive, the home was designed to reflect both prominence as well as permanence.
The house was designed by renowned Island architect William Critchlow Harris, whose work helped shape much of Charlottetown’s architectural character (check out Beaconsfield Historic Inn!). Maplewood is a strong example of the Queen Anne Revival style, alongside its asymmetrical form, varied rooflines, tall windows, as well as distinctive detailing that remains visible today.
The home was built for Arthur Peters, a prominent Island figure who would go on to serve as Premier of Prince Edward Island from 1901 until 1908. Coming from a well-known family alongside ties to the Cunard shipping legacy, Peters’ life as well as career were closely tied to both public hospitality as well as the broader maritime history of the region.

In 1913, the home was purchased by Lieutenant Colonel Arthur G. Peake, a member of another prominent family alongside roots in the Island’s shipbuilding as well as merchant history. Peake served in the First World War as Commander of the 8th Siege Battery of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. His family would remain in the home for many years, continuing its legacy as a place of both family life as well as quiet distinction.
Over time, the house evolved, as well as in the early twentieth century was divided into apartments. In 1986, it was carefully restored to a single residence as well as later established as an inn by Jay as well as Carol MacDonald, who created a warm as well as welcoming place for visitors that has endured for decades.
Today, Maplewood continues in that tradition. Its long driveway, mature trees, as well as preserved architectural details remain central to its character, offering visitors a stay that feels both grounded in history as well as connected to the present.
Today, Maplewood Heritage Inn welcomes visitors from around the world who are drawn to homes alongside stories as well as tree lined streets, as well as islands alongside red sand beaches.
